Inhalation treatment for asthma.

چکیده
Inhaled medication has revolutionised the lives of many children with asthma. Despite this we see many children for whom appropriate inhaled medication has been prescribed but whose symptoms continue to be poorly controlled. In our experience this is often due to poor technique or inappropriately prescribed devices and an inadequate understanding of when and how to use the treatment. The prescribing physician must have a clear idea of the optimal inhalation technique. We have reviewed the standard devices available and our use of them in the treatment of childhood asthma.

Plasma levels and effects of salbutamol after inhaled or i.v. administration in stable asthma.
The response and plasma levels of inhaled (0.15 mg.kg-1) and intravenous salbutamol (5 micrograms.kg-1) were studied in 12 patients who had previously been included in a study of acute severe asthma and were now in a stable phase. The maximal value for change (delta) in plasma salbutamol compared with the pretreatment value was higher after i.v. than after inhalation treatment (59 vs 30 nmol.l-...
متن کاملBudesonide inhalation suspension versus methylprednisolone for treatment of moderate bronchial asthma attacks
BACKGROUND Owing to their side effects, administration of steroids for bronchial asthma attacks should be minimized. We investigated whether budesonide inhalation suspension (BIS) could replace intravenous steroid administration for the treatment of moderate bronchial asthma attacks. SUBJECTS AND METHODS The subjects were children aged 5 years and younger hospitalized for moderate bronchial a...
متن کاملAnti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects of Myrtenol in the rats with allergic asthma
Abstract Aims: To investigate the effect of Myrtenol, the active ingredient of Myrtle, on the oxidant and anti-oxidant indices and cytokines in the allergic asthma. Methods: Allergic asthma was induced by ovalbumin (OVA) sensitization and inhalation in four groups of rats; Control, Asthma, Asthma+Dexamethasone and Asthma+Myrtenol. Myrtenol (50mg/kg) or Dexamethasone (2.5mg/kg) was a...
متن کاملSodium cromoglycate in asthma: correlation between response and serum concentrations.
The clinical response to sodium cromoglycate treatment was compared with its concentration in serum. Twenty five children with asthma entered a 10 week trial of two baseline weeks followed by eight weeks of treatment by the inhalation of 20 mg of sodium cromoglycate spincaps four times a day. Individual clinical response was determined by the differences between baseline and treatment periods o...
متن کاملInactivated Mycobacterium phlei inhalation ameliorates allergic asthma through modulating the balance of CD4+CD25+ regulatory T and Th17 cells in mice
Objective(s): Th2 response is related to the aetiology of asthma, but the underlying mechanism is unclear. To address this point, the effect of nebulized inhalation of inactivated Mycobacterium phlei on modulation of asthmatic airway inflammation was investigated. Materials and Methods: 24 male BALB/c mice were randomly divided into three groups: control group (Group A), asthma model group (G...
متن کاملEffects of Sodium Cromoglycate on Iranian Asthmatic Subjects Without Exposure to any Bronchoconstrictor agent
Cromolyn sodium, a mast cell stabilizing agent, provides an immediate protective effect against the exercise-induced bronchoconstriction while being used before the exercise. However, cromolyn is ineffective in reversing asthmatic bronchospasm; it is used as a maintenance therapy and has a prophylactic role in chronic asthma. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent of change...
